Cycle to school boom in Devon

At St Luke’s Science and Sports College in Exeter, 25 per cent of pupils cycle to school.

Exeter’s Express & Echo interviewed pupil Christian Ellis, 11, who cycles a round-tip of over four miles a day.

He said: “When I was very young, I would walk or be driven in. I think cycling’s fun. It keeps you fit. When you use a car, it causes pollution. When you’re on a bike, it gives you more energy and is good for the environment.”

Exeter benefits from a Bike It officer. Bike It is the bicycle industry seed-funded ‘cycle to school’ programme.
