After 14 years at Coniston, the Saddleback Fred Whitton Challenge is moving: the ride start and finish of the 112 mile sportive will relocate to Grasmere Sports Ground.

The event is credited with being the first cycle sportive in the country. Today there are over 600 events. The ‘Fred’ started with 70 riders in 1999, and last year had 1,750 taking part. The ride is a brutal 112 miles and climbs all the Lakeland passes. To date it has raised over £625,000 for charity. This year the event donated £50,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support, and also supported local charities.

“In a small way the ride started a cycling revolution and we are all extremely proud of this fact,” said event Organiser Paul Loftus.

The event was created as a memorial ride for Lakes Road Club president Fred Whitton who died of cancer, aged 49.

By moving the venue the event can cater for more riders.

Saddleback’s Marketing Manager, Andrew Griffiths said: “As title sponsor and neutral service provider, Saddleback is excited with the new location. It will raise the bar of the event. The Saddleback team is immensely proud to continue our long-term partnership with the Fred Whitton Challenge, and the continued good the event does for both the charities it supports and the great support of grass roots cycling.”
