With 50 days to go until the Tour de France Grand Depart, Go-Ride Clubs across the country are cementing the legacy of the summer of cycling, by hosting come-and-try racing events.

Over 55 Go-Ride Clubs have signed up to deliver an entry-level race in July, as part of the Go-Ride Tour – providing an opportunity for young people inspired by the Tour de France to take part in their first bike race. Go-Ride is sponsored by the bike industry, via the Bike Hub fund.

British Cycling’s Go-Ride team is now encouraging as many more clubs as possible to get involved with the Go-Ride Tour and help to turn inspiration into participation.

British Cycling’s director of coaching, education and development, John Mills, said:

“We often talk about legacy and making the most of iconic sporting events, so that there is a lasting impact upon sport. The volunteer workforce at Go-Ride Clubs across the country have met the growing demand for our fantastic sport with enthusiasm and determination, by providing opportunities for young people to ride their bikes, after being inspired by their cycling heroes. We are encouraging Go-Ride Clubs to continue with this success and join us for the Go-Ride Tour in July.”

In addition to event top tips and administration support, Go-Ride Clubs hosting races in July will receive an exclusive package of Go-Ride Tour resources and prizes, including medals, yellow wristbands and t-shirts reflecting the colours of the Tour de France; yellow, green, polka dot and white.

Jason Kenny, a world champion who was talent-spotted whilst riding for Sportscity Velo Go-Ride Club, said:

“It’s unbelievable to hear about all the young people inspired to get into cycling after watching events on the world stage, and the Go-Ride Tour is a brilliant way for clubs to harness that inspiration and get more kids involved.”

As the anticipation builds and the Grand Depart approaches, event organisers at Go-Ride Clubs across the country are busy planning their Go-Ride Tour races.

Bryden Simpson, Go-Ride Racing event organiser from Richardsons CC, said:

“The club’s Go-Ride volunteer team is really looking forward to the Tour De France. We have planned two Go-Ride Tour events for young riders; a closed road circuit race and then an off-road event later in the month, which gives racers experience of two cycle disciplines, with different racing skills needed for each event. Our coaching sessions leading up to the events will be tailored to the races to give young riders a goal.

“We are having some special banners produced to promote the events and will be awarding riders with the Go-Ride Tour prizes. The t-shirts in particular are unique and will be a fantastic way to emulate the Tour in our very own races!”
