Government’s £12bn “Growth Deals” ought to prioritise walking and cycling, says Sustrans
07/07/2014 AdvocacyThe Government has announced £12 billion of growth funding for the English regions, including investment in transport, new homes and training.
Responding to the announcement, Sustrans Policy Director, Jason Torrance, said;
“Investment in our towns and cities is needed now more than ever because it adds to the vibrancy and prosperity of local communities; especially those outside of London. But transport investment in these areas needs to have a much stronger focus on walking and cycling if we’re to have any hope of economic success and equality in the regions.
“Traffic-free walking and cycling routes pay back four times more than they cost in less than 10 years – a much higher return on investment then other forms of transport – as well as providing a solution to congestion, air pollution and the physical inactivity crisis.
“Walking and cycling is an economic imperative the government can no longer ignore.”
