Sustrans wins green tourism award
23/11/2005 NewsSustrans scooped a prize at the Responsible Travel Awards.
The awards, organised by online travel agent responsibletravel.com, the Times and Geographical Magazine, celebrate companies and organisations in the travel industry that are making significant commitments to responsible tourism. Over 700 organisations were nominated by the public and a shortlist considered by a panel of expert judges.
Sustrans won the “Best Mode of Transport” award for its work to encourage and enable people to travel in ways that are good for people and the environment. Sustrans’ flagship project, the National Cycle Network now passes within a mile of half the UK population. In 2005 it was used for 201 million walking and cycling trips.
Dermot Blastland of First Choice Holidays, sponsors of the awards, said: “Meeting the challenge of responsible tourism is not always easy and Sustrans gives us an inspiring example of what can be achieved.”
